Search the rainforest for the world's largest lemur Endemic wildlife of Ranomafana Sapphire mines, savannahs and canyons of the remote south
Indri & Golden Bamboo Lemurs From the capital, Antananarivo (known as 'Tana' for short), we drive east to Andasibe and spend three nights at the habitat of the Indri - largest of the surviving lemurs - as well as brightly coloured chameleons and many bird species. Next, it's due south, driving through sparkling green highlands and typical villages to Antsirabe where we visit Lake Tritriva, dramatically trapped inside a perfect volcanic cone. Continuing to Ranomafana we spend more time searching the rainforest for lemurs, particularly the Golden Bamboo lemurs, only discovered in 1987.
Botanist's Paradise Descending from the high plateau to Ranohira, we walk deep into Isalo National Park - Madagascar's 'Grand Canyon' - to explore the sandstone massif and weirdly eroded rocks. Botanists will delight in the host of rare endemic plants found here. Dark-skinned tribes live around Toliara on the southwest coast and we'll see their carved and painted tombs, many with aloalo scenes from the life of the deceased. From Toliara we take a boat to the beach at Anakao. We end our tour here at the fishing village with its hundreds of outrigger canoes looking out onto some of the finest snorkelling and diving spots in Madagascar.
Why book this tour?
The drive to Ranomafana takes up most of the day, however the winding road passes varied landscapes of rugged ridges, huge boulders and rural villages surrounded by rice paddies. En route we will stop in Ialatsara for lunch. You will also be offered an optional tour of the garden where local produce is grown and have the opportunity of seeing models of a typical house. In 1987 in Ranomafana National Park a new species of lemur named the Golden Bamboo was found. There are many hidden waterfalls and the Namorona river flows through some impressive gorges, flanked on either side by tropical rainforest.
After breakfast this morning we transfer from Toliara to the small fishing village of Anakao, located to the south, just past the Onilahy river estuary. The rich turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean beckon from our beach hideaway.
Please note: due to limited space on the boat it may be necessary for you to take a smaller overnight bag to Anakao and leave your main luggage in Toliara.
