Southern Highlands and Lemurs
From the capital, Antananarivo, we head to the spa town of Antsirabe, a favourite spot of European missionaries, still retaining its colonial architecture and churches. Our first wildlife encounter is at Ialatsara forest reserve with a nocturnal walk in search of mouse lemur and some of Madagascar's many endemic reptiles. Continuing into the southern highlands we reach Ambalavao and spend time at Anja community-managed reserve, home to some 650 ring-tail lemurs.

Andringitra & Rainforest
Our journey south finally brings us to the granite hills and rainforest of Andringitra National Park. Camping inside the park we spend four days trekking, including a climb of Imarivolanitra, at 2658m the highest point in southern Madagascar. Our trek takes us through varied scenery of rainforest, meadows and granite cliffs with the opportunity to spot some of the parks fifteen species of lemur including the brown lemur.

Zebu plains, Grande Canyon & Coast
As we continue the drive south and west the land opens out into a vast savannah grazed by herds of zebu cattle. We arrive at the labyrinth of canyons and gulleys which make up the eroded sandstone massif of Isalo National Park, our second main trekking site. Over a further four days we explore this remarkable region with the chance to see verreaux's sifaka and ring-tailed lemur as well as plant life including dwarf baobab. From Isalo we pause at Zombitse National Park before our journey ends on the shores of the Indian Ocean at Tulear.
